Why Are Men So Afraid of Skincare Routines?

We can be real here; Men don’t always have the best track record when it comes to skincare routines. Even I don’t religiously wash my face with face wash. I use Cetaphil when my face produce a lot of oils during more humid times throughout the year. Other than that, I use dove soap on my face ONLY when I shower. I am someone who cares a lot about personal hygiene, but there is something about my face that I neglect.

So the big questions comes about, why are men so afraid of skincare routines?

Personally, it’s not that I am afraid of them; I am more afraid of the commitment to a skincare routine everyday. WOAH… a man scared of commitment, nothing new there!

About a month ago, I came across a brand called Lumin. Lumin is a skincare brand directed towards men. The company uses all natural ingredients for each of their products. The products range from skin to hair to body. With that being said, I decided to do a “mancare” haul. In doing this, I thought it would be fun to do a 30 day experiment to share with you lovely readers if Lumin actually works and if it’s worth it. Not Sponsored.

Side note, there was a weird shipping incident with ordering two packages. Nothing too crazy, but definitely interesting.

I ordered two different packages on July 22nd. The first package included the Moisturizing Balm, the Exfoliating Rub, and the Dark Circle Defense Cream. The set was actually free and all I had to do was pay $7.95 shipping. The package shipped on July 24th and got delivered on August 1st. I mean, one week shipping isn’t bad, but I was eager to try these products and share with you guys.

The second package was ordered moments after the first on July 22nd, however the package shipped on the same day as the order (two days before the first). The order included the “Correction Trio Set”: Keratin Recovery Shampoo, the Keratin Recovery Conditioner, the Clarifying Body Wash, the Hydrating Mist Spray, the Eye Puff Deflator, the Anti-Wrinkle Serum, and the No-Nonsense Charcoal Cleanser. Although the second package shipped earlier than first, it came four days later on August 5th.

I thought it was interesting that I ordered two packages on the same day and they both shipped at different times and got delivered at different times. Even more interesting, the one that shipped first somehow got to my house four days later than the one that got shipped two days later. The only theory that I can make sense of all of this is that the first package only had three items whiles the second had seven. Maybe it had to do with the package size? I have no idea.

Once all the products arrived, I unpackaged. To my surprise, the first parcel, which contained the set of three products, were very small; the containers were about half an ounce. These products were supposed to last me two months. This made no sense to me, until I figured out they were the free samples. The second package contained the other normal sized items totaling to seven.

I started the skincare process on August 5th and planned to end on September 5th. Below you will see the products that I ordered and what I thought about each of them:

Moisturizing Balm

My first impression is that container was small; too small to last a week not to mention sixty days. I thought the cream felt sticky and gluey before applying it to my skin. Once I put it on it felt amazing, hydrating, and moisturizing. When it came to the two week mid-way point in the experiment I still loved using the product and I happily continued to everyday until the end of the experiment. This is one of the items I decided to reorder. It is the perfect cream to put on your face before bedtime and my face wakes up feeling refreshed.

Our Moisturizing Balm is tailored to your unique skin type. Built to target dullness and dryness, your face will feel more hydrated and look more refreshed than ever.

Key Ingredients: Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Apple Extract, Ginger Extract

Exfoliating Rub

The exfoliating rub had a good smell and a nice, gritty texture upon opening the container the first time; This is what I would expect for an exfoliating rub. When applying it, it felt good and left me having a smooth face. Throughout time, I realized that the exfoliating rub was not a convenient item to buy because you cannot exfoliate everyday. Although I liked the exfoliating rub, I couldn’t use it as often as I hoped I would be able to. By the end of the experiment, I used this product a total of three times. I did not purchase the product again.

It’s time to rinse & reload with the Exfoliating Rub. By regularly removing dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer and improve skin regeneration, you’ll not only look rejuvenated, you’ll prevent post-shave irritation and reduce the appearance of any old scars. Use once or twice a week and keep the dreaded zombie-face at bay.

Key Ingredients: Charcoal, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Green Tea Extract

Dark Circle Defense Cream

I didn’t have too much opinion on the cream since I thought it would take more than one use to see results. The cream felt light and airy, smelt good, and felt good. In two weeks time, using the product every night before bed, I noticed that I would still have bags and dark circles under my eyes even after I would get 8+ hours of sleep. I continued using the cream and didn’t truly see results. I guess the cream is a “defense” not a remover.

The Dark Circle Defense is the perfect assist against under-eye darkness, wrinkles, and puffiness. You might as well call it what it is, a game-changer.

Key Ingredients: Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Lemon Extract, Caffeine

Keratin Recovery Shampoo

The shampoo smelt AMAZING. The only thing I was worried about was the fact the shampoo, that is supposed to clean the hair, had so many different oils in it. I can’t remember exactly, but I think it was about six different oils within the first ten ingredients. I was afraid my hair would get oily very quickly, but I never noticed that to actually happen in the thirty day span of time. The shampoo had no parabens or sulfates which was a huge plus. It had a great cooling effect to the scalp and made my hair feel healthy. My opinions didn’t change much with the shampoo throughout time and I will purchase it again.

They say it’s normal, on average, to lose 50 to 100 strands of hair every day. Yikes. For those of us who might be losing even more than that, it’s always a good idea to take some preventative measures. Our Keratin Recovery Shampoo with green tea boosts hair growth and strengthens follicles with a formulation that nourishes the scalp and gives every last strand a solid foundation.

Key Ingredients: Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Ceramide, Peppermint Oil

Keratin Recovery Conditioner

My favorite shower-thing is when I have a shampoo and conditioner that match in scent. However, the scent was completely different from the shampoo to the conditioner. The conditioner had a good smell, but it was almost too feminine smelling for me. I would expect Maggie to use this. To my surprise, the bottle was significantly smaller than the shampoo bottle; I loved this. Most men don’t use conditioner as often or as much of an amount. This decreases the potential of waste.

Hair repair. Has a nice ring to it, right? Our lightweight Keratin Strengthening Conditioner with jojoba oil not only repairs damaged ends and boosts the health of your hair, it fortifies weakened follicles to reduce the appearance of any thinning. Don’t shave your head just yet—you’re still in this game.

Key Ingredients: Jojoba Oil, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Keratin

Clarifying Body Wash

My very first impression of the body wash was that it was extremely liquid-ish. What I am trying to say, the body wash was so milky that it would never create the bubbly lather that I love when using an ordinary bar of soap. The wash would just sit on my skin. At the end of my washing I would feel as though my skin is not clean. To say the least, I stopped using it and I personally do not recommend it.

A nice hot shower feels great, except when it dries out your skin. Keep your body’s moisture where it belongs—on your body. Our Clarifying Body Wash is formulated with tea tree oil to effectively clean and promote clearer skin, plus aloe vera and jojoba oil to nourish you whole and prevent dryness.

Key Ingredients: Tea Tree Leaf Oil, Aloe Vera, Ceramide

Touchless Hydrating Mist Spray

There isn’t much to say about this one. I like it! It doesn’t really have a strong odor, but it is really refreshing and it has that kick I need most days in the middle of a long work day. It is the perfect tool to wake up my eyes and face.

Of course you don’t cry in movies—that’s just your Touchless Face Mist. It’s formulated to keep your skin hydrated and clean when you’re on the move (perfect as a jolt on long flights or to replace that afternoon coffee).

Key Ingredients: Ginger Root, Licorice Root Extract, Green Tea Extract

Eye Puff Deflator

For this product, just like the dark circle defense cream, I knew it would take a few weeks to see any sort of results. All I knew in the beginning was that it felt nice to put on in the mornings. Some time goes by and I realize that my bags are going away faster in the mornings then they previously had been before using Lumin. What I realized is, when I roll the product under my eye I am also applying pressure which increases blood flow. To be honest, I don’t know if the product does anything or if the pressure of me rolling the product around does.

While nobody should feel like they’ve had an allergic reaction to a good night’s sleep, eye puffiness in the morning is very much a thing. Our Eye-Puff Deflator helps bring your skin back to its normal self and even softens up fine lines and crow’s feet.

Key Ingredients: Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Cucumber Extract, Green Tea Extract

Anti-Wrinkle Serum

Again, there is no telling if this product worked its wonders to reduce my skin’s chance of aging. What I do know, the roller felt nice on problem areas such as crow’s feet and the serum smelt nice. After application the serum does feel sticky, but it goes away within the hour or so. I will continue using the product until it runs out or expires (this is the only product with an expiration).

Your skin and the sun have a love/hate relationship. While a sweet tan is always nice, sun damage is the #1 external cause of aging. Counteract those long hours in the sun with our supplemental Anti-Wrinkle Serum. It’s jam-packed with vitamins to help you counteract sun damage and fine lines.

Key Ingredients: Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Hyaluronic Acid, Pomegranate Extract

No-Nonsense Charcoal Cleanser

What I found is that the charcoal cleanser was the only real item that I would be able to wash my face with everyday. It left me feeling clean every use. I do like it and I will repurchase it, but if I hadn’t bought it I wouldn’t have a facial cleanser to use daily.

Off-the-shelf soap can really dry out your skin, upset its pH balance, and cause serious damage. Our Charcoal Cleanser safely and effectively removes gunky oil, daily grime, and pollution and dirt buildup so your skin’ll stay as clean as fresh kicks, right out the box.

Key Ingredients: Charcoal, Rose Flower Oil, Centella Asiatica

Final Thoughts

I do not believe Lumin products are a permanent solution for men’s skincare. Sure, they have some nice products to use from time to time and some to use daily, but not forever. There is no solution to an actual face wash; You would need to decide between using the charcoal cleanser and the body wash for an everyday face cleaning. To be honest, I have had facial cleansers from Walmart that work just as well, if not better that also have competitive prices.

I hope you guys liked this post. If you have used or are planning to use Lumin in the near future, please let me know which products you got or are getting! I would also love to hear your opinions on Lumin as a brand!
